Oracle Adds PaaS and SaaS To the Oracle Cloud

Specializing in cloud engineering and database management, Oracle Corporation is a major player in the current IT landscape. While their roots can be traced all the way back to the 1970s, it’s some of their latest innovations, such as Oracle Cloud at Customer and their recent embrace of platform-as-a-service and software-as-a-service availability, that are making headlines as of late.

Taking Aim at Customer Service

Oracle introduced their groundbreaking service, Cloud at Customer, in early 2016. Meant to quell concerns about online privacy and to give their customers greater control over their data, Cloud at Customer offers individual public deployments of Oracle’s cloud within the company’s own data centers.

Thomas Kurian, Oracle’s president, summed up the service and its purpose by stating: “We are committed to helping our customers move to the cloud to help speed their innovation, fuel their business growth, and drive business transformation. Today’s news is unprecedented. We announced a number of new cloud services and we are now the first public cloud vendor to offer organizations the ultimate in choice on where and how they want to run their Oracle Cloud.”

Despite the fact that it’s barely over a year old, Oracle’s Cloud at Customer has already been a resounding success. The development team with Oracle is hoping to capitalize on the initial success and spur future growth by adding support for platform-as-a-service (PaaS), software-as-a-service (SaaS) and infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS).

Kurian echoed his earlier sentiments in a recent interview, where he also highlighted the new service offerings. He stated: “Oracle Cloud at Customer is a direct response to the remaining barriers to cloud adoption and turning those obstacles into opportunities by letting customers choose the location of their cloud services. We are providing a unique service that enables our customers to leverage Oracle Cloud services, including SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS, both on their premises and in our cloud,” said Kurian. “Customers gain all the benefits of Oracle’s robust cloud offerings, in their own data centres, all managed and supported by Oracle.”

Oracle hopes to attract even more customers, particularly those who have been hesitant to embrace cloud computing to its fullest extent. By offering the full range of data management, software deployment and infrastructure development functionality, customers will find it much easier to maintain their competitiveness amongst a widening IT landscape.

Mark Hurd, Oracle CEO, recently went on record to say that a full transition to cloud computing will take at least 10 years. He also predicts that 80% of corporate data centers will make the switch during this time.
While the accuracy of his forecasts remains to be seen, it’s safe to say that Oracle is certainly doing their part to usher in a new wave of computing. Between the Cloud at Customer program and the recent introduction of PaaS, SaaS and IaaS, Oracle is giving their customers all the tools needed to succeed in the 21st century.
