With the number of consumer data leaks on the rise, it’s not surprising to see the United States government stepping in to address the problem. According to a brand new Executive Order issued by President Joe Biden, foreign adversaries will be prevented from accessing personal data about Americans – including those who play roles within the U.S. government itself.

The Latest Executive Order

Biden’s latest Executive Order is specifically meant to protect the data of journalists, activists, political figures, and patients. While it was designed for these demographics, the order will ultimately provide every American with more data security. But this isn’t the first time the Biden Administration has made efforts to thwart potential data and identity thieves.

Improving the Nation’s Cybersecurity Across the Board

In May 2021, just a few short months after taking office, President Biden issued his first Executive Order regarding the subject of cybersecurity. This order was really focused on protecting federal networks, including the cybersecurity practices therein, but it also strengthened data protection and cybersecurity for the entire nation.

But Biden’s data security measures aren’t limited to Executive Orders. He has nominated and appointed numerous IT experts to roles with various governmental agencies, including the Department of Commerce and the Federal Trade Commission. These individuals will play key roles in shaping the future of data privacy laws.

The Biden Administration has also expressed their support for federal privacy legislation. His plans include comprehensive framework that would establish a consistent set of data privacy standards across the country. Although these plans have yet to be fully realized, it’s certainly a step in the right direction.

In October 2023, President Biden issued an Executive Order regarding AI. Not only does it establish safety and security standards for future AI platforms, but it ensures that the U.S. can take the lead in managing the risks of AI. This order includes protections related both to AI and general data privacy, including the development of standardized testing tools for AI platforms, protection against AI-engineered biological weapons, the establishment of an AI-oriented cybersecurity program, and more.

A fact sheet, issued in tandem with Biden’s Executive Order of October 2023, shed some more light into Biden’s plans for AI by saying: “The actions that President Biden directed today are vital steps forward in the U.S.’s approach on safe, secure, and trustworthy AI. More action will be required, and the Administration will continue to work with Congress to pursue bipartisan legislation to help America lead the way in responsible innovation.”

Many Trump-era privacy rules have also been reviewed since Joe Biden took office, and some of them have been reversed or modified. These rules are primarily centered on consumer privacy and data protection.

Finally, President Biden has also called for international discussions and collaborations regarding consumer data privacy and protection. He’s made steps to establish a globalized set of standards for data governance, though they have yet to be adopted on any sort of large scale.
