A Look at the iDrive One Semi-Portable Storage Device

If you've been holding out on the benefits of cloud computing until something more accessible and portable comes along, the iDrive one might be the solution you've been looking for. Approximately the size of today's external hard drives, but with far more connectivity, the iDrive One provides a great alternative to full-scale cloud solutions of today.

By utilizing a combination of localized storage, thanks to a built in hard drive, as well as the ability to connect to iDrive's personal cloud platform, the iDrive One offers data redundancy and increased accessibility. Moreover, since it can be used with a PC, Mac, smartphone or tablet, the iDrive One even provides synchronization between all of your important files.

Technical Specifications of the iDrive One

As far as technical specifications go, the iDrive One comes equipped with an 802.11ac wireless base station that supports simultaneous connections of 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Though this feature is limited to a radius of 150 feet around the drive, this is a pretty nice feature to have.

The iDrive One can also be mounted as a FAT32 volume, although this feature disables the wireless connectivity of the device. Still, it's nice to have this option if needed.

Users will also have their choice of hard drive. Traditional, disk-based hard drives are available at a capacity of 1 or 2 TBs, but individual users can opt for a SSD with either 128GB or 256GB of space.

Finally, the device includes an AC adapter and a USB 3.0 cable. Because the device does not include an onboard battery, it will need to remain connected to the power adapter whenever it is in use.

Perhaps the biggest flaw of the iDrive One is the lack of any real security or encryption when trying to backup your files on Android or iOS systems. Local machines, including both PCs and Macs, do feature 256-bit AES encryption.
The iDrive Personal Cloud

As mentioned, users of the iDrive One will also have access to their own iDrive personal cloud. While this is a subscription service, those who purchase a brand new iDrive One unit will be given a complementary year of cloud service at no additional cost. This gives you plenty of time to explore the features and functionality of the iDrive One, as well as the iDrive cloud, before committing to a long-term subscription. The device can still be used as localized storage without an active subscription to the iDrive cloud.

More Information

Although the iDrive One and the iDrive cloud are still rather new to the market, their potential in today's fast-paced, ever-evolving and cloud-centric world cannot be denied. If the team with iDrive continues to make improvements to their platform, including both the iDrive device and their cloud platform, and if they continued to pursue customer satisfaction, the company may soon become a major player in the game.
