Recently Apple announced two new models of their popular iPhone device. One of these was the iPhone 5s, the more expensive of the two. The iPhone 5s has new features including a fingerprint scanner in the home button, an improved camera and a completely different chipset to make it run faster.
With the new model coming up, some iPhone customers might be looking to upgrade to the latest version of the phone. As such, if you want your personal information stored on the phone to carry over to the iPhone 5s, it’ll be necessary to transfer the data over. This article will explore how to do that through a couple of techniques.
The following guide will show you how to transfer your saved messages, email accounts, photos, notes and other personal settings. Not everything will be carried over, so don’t destroy or get rid of your original phone before you’ve taken everything off it.
Backing up using iCloud
If you have a newer device that is running on iOS 5 or later then the data transfer can be done using iCloud (if you have an account). Let’s take a look at how to do that first.
If you have a newer device that is running on iOS 5 or later then the data transfer can be done using iCloud (if you have an account). Let’s take a look at how to do that first.
Once that has completed, turn on your new iPhone 5s and run through the setup stages (like languages and login details). Connect to your Wi-Fi network during this. When you get to the ‘Set Up iPhone’ page you should select ‘Restore from iCloud Backup’. Select the backup you made previously and then wait while everything is restored to the iPhone 5s.
If you want to bring across data such as music, videos and apps then you should connect your iPhone 5s to your iTunes account and all this data will be transferred.
Backing up using iTunes
If your old device is in an iOS version prior to 5 then you will have to use iTunes to transfer your data to your new iPhone 5s.
First, make sure that you have the latest version of iTunes and iOS installed. Connect your iPhone to your computer, load up iTunes and then select the device in the top right corner (you need to be on the Library page if it doesn’t show). Then click the ‘Back Up Now’ button.
Now turn on your iPhone 5s and go through the setup stages and select your Wi-Fi network when prompted. If you don’t have an internet connection available, you can select ‘Connect to iTunes’. When you get to the ‘Set Up iPhone’ page, select ‘Restore from iTunes Backup’. Now connect your iPhone 5s to the same computer you performed the backup on and iTunes will ask if you want to restore your backup. Your 5s will restart and you’re now ready to use your new phone.
