Let's face it, the concept of a mobile medical device that is meant for consumers to own and use isn't exactly groundbreaking. Despite the fact that the technology has been around for quite some time, few developers have managed to capitalize on the latest innovations of next-gen functionality. AliveCor, an IT development company dedicated to pushing the boundaries of exactly what mobile health solutions can accomplish in the 21st century.

With that in mind, AliveCor has recently unveiled their Kardia Band strap, which meant as a complementary accessory for the Apple Watch. Serving as a replacement for the original Apple Watch strap, the Kardia Band features an integrated ECG, which, as expected, monitors the wearer's heart rate. Whereas most of the mobile heart rate monitors on the market today uses LED technology to monitor the heart rate, the Kardia Band actually uses a built-in sensor mechanism.

Furthermore, the Kardia app, which is available as a complementary download, is capable of running complex analyses on data that is collected through the Kardia Band. This information is used to detect irregular heartbeats, or atrial fibrillation, which is a leading cause of stroke. The Kardia Band also gives the user the ability to record voice memos that are attached to each specific reading, which allows you to provide some details or insight for doctors and nurses at a later date.

On top of that, the Kardia Band even works with the Apple Health app. This lets the wearer achieve heart rate statistics that are updated with every step or even their intake of calories. With all of the functionality seen in the AliveCor Kardia Band, it's safe to say that they're trying to cornering the market with this device.

Vic Gundotra, CEO of AliveCor, explained what his team is hoping to achieve through the release of the Kardia Band. He was quoted as saying: "Kardia Band for Apple Watch represents both the future of proactive heart health and the introduction of the Wearable MedTech category. These combined technologies give us the ability to deliver personal reports that provide analysis, insights and actionable advice for the patient and their doctor."

The original press release even featured a quoted from a licensed doctor. Kevin R. Campbell, MD, FACC with North Carolina Heart and Vascular UNC Healthcare, explained some of the benefits of the Kardia Band by stating: "The personal, discrete Kardia Band is a perfect fit for Apple Watch. It allows patients to easily measure and record their heart rhythm in real time. This can provide patients with a sense of control—which is vitally important to successful patient engagement in the treatment of chronic disease."
