Overview of the High-Rely MPac-G2 RAID Backup Drive

The XChange Solution Provider event, held in early 2015 in Dallas, Texas, highlighted a number of new technologies and innovations within the IT industry. One such product, the MPac-G2 RAID Backup Drive from Highly Reliable Systems, drew a great deal of attention on account of its speed, form factor and efficiency. In fact, the MPac-G2 RAID Backup Drive, at only 2.5 inches and boasting 4 terabytes of storage space per cartridge, provides an ideal solution for long-term storage or when physically transporting files from one location to another.

Highly Reliable Systems’ chief technology officer, Tom Hoops, spoke about some of the features and benefits of the new MPac-G2 RAID Backup Drive. He was quoted as saying: “Our latest MPac G2 media provides a very small footprint and can easily double the reliability and capacity of many 2.5” SSDs or HDDs by having an integrated RAID 0/1 controller in the cartridge itself. MPac's on-board USB 3.0 access provides speedy in-field and emergency access, while the SATA docking connector allows for high-speed cartridge style insertion and removal into the chassis. The MPac media enclosure is versatile, and can accommodate either one or two 2.5” drives each up to 15mm thick.”

With the USB 3.0 connectivity of the MPac-G2 RAID Backup Drive, the device is able to achieve transfer speeds of 260 MB/s in RAID-O mode during preliminary testing. Users who aren’t so concerned with speed may opt for the device’s RAID-1 configuration, which allows for greater redundancy in data protection. Apart from supporting RAID-O and RAID-1, the MPac-G2 RAID Backup Drive also includes JBOD support. Finally, the built-in SATA 6.0 Gb/s connections give users the choice between USB or SATA connectivity.

Darren McBridge, chief executive officer with Highly Reliable Systems, talked about some of the more advanced functionality of the MPac-G2 RAID Backup Drive. He stated: “By configuring High-Rely MPac-equipped server backup appliances using our Scheduled Mirroring feature, technicians can achieve 'air gap' security without the need to remove MPac cartridges. Scheduled Mirroring creates point-in-time snapshots stored to separate MPac drives, which then automatically and transparently drops the secondary drive offline to protect backup data from human error or viruses and malware that attack and maliciously encrypt network data.”
