Microsoft Teams With Ola To Develop a Connected Vehicle Platform

You might not be familiar with the brand Ola, but if you’ve heard of Uber, you get the gist of it. India’s prominent cab-hailing app, they’re already revolutionizing the public transportation industry throughout the country. While they’re current services are limited to India, some of the recent moves might bring them to the streets of the United States before long. In fact, with availability in 110 different cities, they’re already in direct competition with Uber to gain control of that top spot in the market.

Microsoft Enters the Picture

It’s apparent that Ola already has a lot of things going for them, but their recent partnership with Microsoft has the potential to transform their business in new and innovative ways. The team’s first endeavor, however, involves the integration of even more connectivity into Ola’s fleet.

Satya Nadella, CEO with Microsoft, spoke about the current state of the automotive sector and the need for increased connectivity by saying: “Today’s car is quickly becoming the ultimate computing device and together with Ola, we’re focused on providing more intelligent, connected and productive experiences to our customers. The combination of Microsoft Azure, Office 365 and our AI platform with Ola Play will deliver new customer experiences and business opportunities across the automotive ecosystem.”

As Microsoft’s CEO’s alluded to, the company will introduce cloud connectivity, advanced artificial intelligence and various productivity tools. These features will complement the current functionality of Ola’s fleet, which includes such technology as onboard diagnostics, next-gen navigation and automated predictive maintenance notifications.

The new features introduced by Microsoft aren’t necessarily meant for the driver. Many of them are aimed passengers, including complete integration with Office 365 and Skype, but voice activation lets both drivers and passengers benefit from much of the new functionality. All of this connectivity is made possible via Ola Play, which serves as a bridge between the technical side of the platform and the user experience.

Bhavish Aggarwal, CEO with Ola, echoed Microsoft’s sentiments and expressed full support for the new partnership by saying: “Globally, the auto industry is experiencing a seismic shift as the definition of automobiles is increasingly changing from gas-powered vehicles to technology-packed, connected devices. With Ola Play, we have already set the tone for connected vehicles in India; together with Microsoft, we can make the new platform available to a larger, global audience and unlock futuristic experiences for customers worldwide.”

Finally, the new platform also utilizes advanced data collection and analytics, which lets Microsoft control and refine the user experience even further. Expected features include usage-based insurance options, driver assistance functionality, integrated safety features and much more.
