Developers have been steadily improving modern artificial intelligence (AI) systems over the past decade. It’s become so popular that the OpenAI research lab was formed in 2015 as a type of open-source platform to spur AI development into the future.

One of their most anticipated projects to date, DALL-E, is capable of producing digital images from a random phrase or collection of descriptive words. Although it doesn’t always produce an accurate depiction of the words, it does result in an original image. It’s easy to see why such a project is attracting designers, artists, and digital art lovers all across the globe.

Skyrocketing Popularity

The DALL-E platform is so popular that, just five months after its initial release, it already touts 1.5 million users. Collectively, these users create 2 million unique images every single day. Unfortunately, it was so popular that the team with OpenAI had to implement a waiting list for new users.

Moreover, the platform also paved the way for the latest phenomenon of text-to-image AI systems. There are web-based solutions, smartphone apps, and full-blown software suites – many of which were directly inspired by OpenAI and DALL-E.

Making DALL-E Available to All

Luckily for interested users, OpenAI has recently removed their waiting list for DALL-E. Not only does this give established graphic artists and designers the opportunity to begin using one of the most powerful text-to-image converters to date, but it lets anyone with even a passing interest in AI or digital art to try their own hand and come up with their own unique creations.

One of their latest blog posts reads, in part: “Starting today, we are removing the waitlist for the DALL•E beta so users can sign up and start using it immediately. More than 1.5M users are now actively creating over 2M images a day with DALL•E—from artists and creative directors to authors and architects—with over 100K users sharing their creations and feedback in our Discord community.”

Privacy and Security Concerns

A driving force behind their initial waiting list for DALL-E was the potential for misuse. Since it was possible to use the platform to create sexual explicit or even violent content, the team with OpenAI needed to implement strict security controls before they could release the platform to the public.

OpenAI’s blog post went on to say: “Learning from real-world use has allowed us to improve our safety systems, making wider availability possible today. In the past months, we’ve made our filters more robust at rejecting attempts to generate sexual, violent and other content that violates our content policy and built new detection and response techniques to stop misuse.”

Paving the Way for the Future
It’s already easy to see how big of an impact OpenAI and DALL-E has had on the advancement of AI. However, this is only a glimpse at some of the innovations we can expect when we develop modern AI systems even further.
