Introducing Rubrik Alta 4.2 for Hybrid Enterprise Deployments

Commonly known as the Cloud Data Management company, Rubrik recently unveiled Alta 4.2 to help enterprises achieve instantaneous application availability anytime and at any place – regardless of their preferred IT framework or infrastructure. Considering the fact that over 90% of enterprises are set to expand their reach to include multiple cloud services by 2020, it's safe to say that we'll be hearing a lot more about Rubrik Alta and its future iterations.

Primary Features

In a recent blog post by Rubrik, a representative wrote, in part: "Today, we’re thrilled to help solve the biggest challenges of the hybrid cloud enterprise with Rubrik Alta 4.2. Our newest additions simplify how organizations manage and protect data across their hybrid cloud deployments, whether they are building on AWS or other environments."

At the time of this writing, Rubrik Alta is currently in version 4.2. Some of its most notable features include:

Cloud-based data protection: Alta 4.2 provides cloud-native backup and lifecycle management via native AWS APIs and snapshots of EBS volumes. This lets user create a replica of any EC2 instance within any AWS availability region with a few clicks of the mouse.

Greater manageability of private cloud and self-service frameworks: Alta 4.2 is fully integrated with vCloud Director, vCD, to facilitate an elastic cloud architecture for enterprises of all sizes. In addition, the introduction of Rubrik Envoy provides even more protection for workloads that are positioned across multi-tenant environments.

Simplified data management: Alta 4.2 was developed with two key phrases in mind: "unprecedented simplicity" and "an intuitive UI." Not only does Alta 4.2 achieve both of these benchmarks, but they've expanded their services with a plethora of features, including policy-based management, incremental-forever backups, secure cloud archival and more.

Most users will be more than happy with the primary features of Rubrik Alta 4.2, but there are some smaller, lesser-known capabilities that are also useful. This includes:

Running Edge on Nutanix AHV and Microsoft Hyper-V: Support for Nutanix AHV and Microsoft Hyper-V was originally introduced in Alta 4.0, but the 4.2 upgrade features full support for the Edge appliance, too.

Customizing network throttling and traffic prioritization: Alta 4.2 lets the global admin choose between no throttling (no bandwidth limits), default throttling (customized to the admin's specifications) or scheduled throttling (to accommodate multiple configurations at different times of the day).

Introducing support for SNMPv2c: An updated version of the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) that leverages a community-based security model for maximum data protection.

Restoring multiple files simultaneously: Alta 4.2 lets users restore multiple files via a single recovery operation, thereby increasing operational efficiency.

As you can see, Alta 4.2 is the culmination of Rubrik's hard work and development over the years. While there are bound to be future updates that add even more functionality, it's current status as one of the most comprehensive solutions in enterprise-level application availability cannot be denied.
