Rubrik might be a young startup company of only a few years only, but that hasn’t stopped them from making a huge name for themselves in one of the world’s most highly competitive industries: cloud-based data management. Based out of Palo Alto, CA, the team includes several engineers from the likes of Facebook, Google and Oracle; and they’ve already pioneered the world’s first cloud-based data management platform for hybridized cloud environments.
Enter Alta
It’s a unique product to say the least. Their latest release, dubbed simply as Alta, is version 4.0 of their flagship product – but it represents the ninth and biggest update in Rubrik’s timeline thus far. Apart for introducing support for enterprise operating systems like VMware and Hyper-V, it also adds compatibility for Windows- and Linux-based systems as well as Amazon and Microsoft cloud environments.
Alta also adds new support for disaster recovery as well as application deployment, management and mobility. Offered through a utility known as CloudOn, this feature is critical with the rising number of cyberattacks and the increased threat of hackers or malicious software.
Bipul Sinha, CEO of Rubrik, explained the purpose behind his company and their cloud management platform in a recent interview by stating: “Rubrik helps enterprises bring their static data to life. Fundamentally, Rubrik does away with all the point products (backup server, backup proxies, replication, accelerators, deduplication, disk storage, tape, off-site storage) that are necessarily involved in conventional backup and recovery systems. It replaces them with a single-box, converged backup and globally deduplicated storage, in one package.”
Increasing the accessibility of Alta even further is the fact that it is available as a software-only package. Not only is this designed specifically for virtualized environments, but it streamlines the entire setup and installation process on behalf of the end-user.
Arvind Nithrakashyap, CTO of Rubrik, talked about the new functionality of Alta. He was quoted as saying: “With Alta, Rubrik answers the enterprise customer. With virtualization support for VMware and Hyper-V, physical Windows and Linux, and native Oracle and SQL, every enterprise can benefit from Rubrik’s consumer-grade simplicity, performance and security. This is truly a single platform for application availability – for any app, anywhere.”
While Rubrik hasn’t yet achieved full-scale cloud management, the recent release of Alta is a gigantic step in the right direction. Considering what they’ve already achieved in the industry as well as their quickened pace, it’s only a matter of time until Rubrik becomes a household name and a major player in the world of cloud computing.
The Future of Rubrik and the Hybrid Cloud
According to the latest reports, more than 80% of IT companies will adopt hybrid cloud environments by 2018. With so many new customers expected to migrate their businesses to the cloud, companies like Rubrik are staying ahead of the game by introducing new service upgrades and improvements.
