It wasn't long ago when those who worked in the field – photographers and videographers, for example – had to retreat back to a studio to process, distribute and archive their content. All of this changed thanks to the dawn of mobile technology – laptops, notebooks and even smartphones all make it possible to create a makeshift digital studio wherever it's needed.
In most applications, average consumer hardware is more than enough. It's no longer necessary to purchase thousands of dollars in equipment to take award-winning shots or produce great digital content. While it might help in some situations, a skilled hand with amateur equipment can create works of art that are just as stunning.
But in other cases, mobile studios demand equipment that is more durable and rugged than the average consumer tech. As portable as these devices, they still contain sensitive equipment that is prone to damage.
Enter the LaCie Rugged RAID Pro
To solve this issue, the team with LaCie recently unveiled the Rugged RAID Pro external drive. Available with 4TB of capacity, the device features USB-C, USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt 3 connectivity as well as support for RAID 0 or RAID 1 configurations.
In case users do require additional storage while they're in the field, the drive also features an SD card slot for extra capacity. The LaCie Rugged RAID Pro even features dual FireWire ports to daisy chain additional peripherals as needed.
But what really sets this drive apart from the competitors is the rugged framework that surrounds the drive enclosure. In fact, it's the first thing most users notice – it's hard to ignore with its bright orange color.
Not only is this a safety mechanism in and of itself, alerting everyone to its presence, but it serves as a durable shell that is capable of withstanding drops from nearly 7', or 5 meters, in height, or pressure that is equal to a 1-ton car. It's also IP54 rated for resistance against water and dust, making it perfect for various working environments.
The LaCie Rugged RAID Pro also manages to achieve this without going overboard on the physical size of the unit, either. In fact, it's so compact that the device can easily be slipped into a small backpack, laptop case or purse when you're on-the-go.
Tim Bucher, senior vice president of consumer solutions with LaCie's parent company, Seagate, spoke about the need for a specialty product like the Rugged RAID Pro. he was recently quoted as saying: "Digital content creation is key in the media and entertainment industry, comprising of unique moments that are the product of time and money – and often irreplaceable."
While the device carries a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $349, each new purchase of the LaCie Rugged RAID Pro includes a three-year warranty and two years of data recovery services from Seagate.
